Healthy Breaks is a Big Lottery funded programme which is supported by the Northern Neighbourhoods Health Action Zone, the Northern Health and Social Care Trust, the Northern Investing for Health Partnership, the North Eastern Education & Library Board and the Southern Education & Library Board.

'Healthy Breaks’ aims to encourage children to adopt and sustain healthy eating patterns from an early age by introducing ‘Healthy Breaks Policies’ into participating primary schools. This encourages children and staff to take only a healthy snack at break time. Healthy break time snacks are: fruit, vegetables, bread, water and milk.

The Healthy breaks team have been working closely with 28 Primary Schools in the Northern Health and Social Services Board area, including 10 schools in the Northern Neighbourhoods Health Action Zone neighbourhoods. These schools have been supported through the process of developing a healthy breaks policy.

This process included:

  • Consulting with parents, staff, board of governors
  • Organising, facilitating and taking part in information events for the school and local communities
  • Production of support materials for teachers, parents, carers and pupils
  • Facilitating class lessons

All 28 schools now have a healthy eating policy in place and the Healthy Breaks Programme has been externally evaluated by BDO Stoy Hayward. The evaluation report is available to download below.
