Health Based Events

“Health Based Events” is a partnership programme co-ordinated by Northern Neighbourhoods Health Action Zone (NNHAZ) and Supporting Communities NI (SCNI).  The programme is currently in its seventh year.  It is a tailored programme of events and activities which promotes health and well-being and provides a catalyst for wider community involvement and participation, across the 14 NNHAZ neighbourhoods within the Northern Health & Social Services Board area.

The programme brings together stakeholders from the community, voluntary and statutory sector to develop and implement local projects in response to local issues, in the Health Action Zone neighbourhoods.  In the past number of years each participating neighbourhood has been supported to access up to £2000 per year for projects and events in their area.

The Health Based Events programme supports and empowers local people to address issues which they have identified in their Community Action Plans as having a negative effect on the health and well-being of their families, friends and neighbours.  Issues highlighted by communities reflect the wider determinants of health and include the categories of environment, social, community safety, housing and health.

Across the 14 Health Action Zone neighbourhoods, a wide range of health and well being projects have been implemented over the seven years that the scheme has been running.  The programme has also raised awareness of, and increased access to the support and expertise which exists within the statutory and voluntary sector, to help communities create safer, healthy and good places to live.

The aims of the Health Based Events programme are listed below:

  • Support the implementation of the Regional Investing for Health agenda
  • Raise awareness of and increase access to statutory and voluntary sector expertise and support for the local community
  • Engage with communities in disadvantaged areas to improve the health and well-being of local residents
  • Act as a catalyst for wider community involvement and participation across the 14 NNHAZ neighbourhoods
  • Support communities to create safer, healthy and good places to live
