Dancercise & Goal

Dancercise & Goal is a partnership programme co-ordinated by the Northern Neighbourhoods Health Action Zone (NNHAZ) and the Northern Partnership for Physical Activity (NPPA).  The programme consists of pop-dance workshops and football coaching, and is targeted at young people living in the fourteen NNHAZ neighbourhoods within the Northern Health and Social Services Board.

Dancercise & Goal was awarded £30,469 from the Big Lottery Fund and was delivered over a two year period from 2004-2006.  Each of the fourteen NNHAZ neighbourhoods benefited from one programme of pop-dance workshops and one programme of football coaching in each year of the initiative.  Each programme was delivered over 6-8 weeks.

The aim of Dancercise & Goal was to:

  1. Increase opportunities for exercise for young people living within disadvantaged areas
  2. Engage young people in constructive youth activities especially group and team based activities which should have an emphasis on fun and enjoyment
  3. To empower young people and community groups to develop and implement further activity programmes after the Dancercise and Goal programme
  4. To raise awareness among young people about the links between physical activity and health

Over 1,265 young people under the age of 16 benefited from the Dancercise & Goal programme.
